pets our friends

Is there any seven-year-old who has not longed for a puppy? But, as most parents know, longing for a pet and actually dealing with the day-to- day reality of owning a pet are two different things.

The lack of basic education regarding animal care has prompted the Society For Animals in Distress to implement human/animal bonding lessons for Grade 2 learners in nine disadvantaged areas in Gauteng.

The initiative began with just three schools in 2003 and has since expanded to include 52 schools, with an estimated 10000 children participating in the programme.

“Our programme commenced five years ago and our aim is to increase knowledge, awareness and animal-owner responsibility in children from a young age,” says Heather Muller, the general manager of the society.

“We have a trained education officer who takes it upon himself to approach principals in schools about the initiative. The principal, in turn, communicates with the Gauteng Department of Education and we are then able to begin our lessons, which are in line with the department’s guidelines and requirements,” Muller says.

The education officer and an assistant conduct all the lessons for the project, which currently runs in Gauteng. He makes use of various visual aids in order to ensure that the children completely understand the message.

THERE'S A wonderful knitting store in my neighborhood. It's a large room with a few tables pushed end to end, like a variant of King Arthur's court. The owner sits serenely in the middle of half-finished sweaters and dropped purls. She remembers every project each customer has begun. Visiting her is a life pleasure.

Here is another life pleasure: twice a year or so, I take my dog to the vet. For 20 years, some family pet or other has been a patient of his. One day, while he was washing his hands after seeing my cats, he started to talk about the health problems of his own pets. It was as if I had been knighted after all those fur balls. Now our appointments are reunions, little joys, even though the dog still dreads them.

Incidental intimacies fill the day: the knitting store owner, the vet, a likable colleague, my dentist discussing a recipe with himself over my open mouth, the parents of other children encountered cheerfully on playgrounds, a neighbor of many years I mean to invite for dinner. All of them are happenstance encounters that come to be counted on over time. My mother always said it was important to coordinate colors before decorating a room. But these are random fabrics thrown together by fate. Through the years, you grow used to chintzes and polka dots. They bring swaths of color. One day, you realize with surprise, these fabrics are the whole colorful world.

A glimpse of the passion and vitriol the sport of dog racing can stir up could be found Saturday along one of main roads through Bonita Springs.

On the inside of the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track, preparations were under way for an event that would celebrate the track’s 50 years in business. A big race that night would leave $50,000 riding on the running times of a group of elite dogs.

PETS GAMES

Dos an Park is a fairly small square in Ganging, southern Seoul that commemorates the Korean patriot, Do San Han Chang-ho (1878-1938). He mostly worked in the U.S. and China during Japan's occupation of Korea.

He was a mentor of fellow countrymen leading their lives in support of Korea. It was a pity that he passed away before Korea's independence from Japan. However he left some footprints in the park.

The park, about seven acres, covers his memorial hall and burial site. It is impressive to see his legendary sayings carved into a couple of stones in the park such as ``Young people! If you love your motherland, then first of all, you should build up a man of strong moral fiber yourself."

A noticeable artifact is his sedentary bronze statue pensively sitting on a bench near a standing one. The surroundings are in good shape and are pretty Eco-friendly. One can see various trees and flowers in different seasons as well as watch the birds.

Magpies are inhabitants here, hovering over their nests in the tall trees. Occasionally some starlings are on the wing uttering wheezy sounds.

Objectively speaking the square is a public commons for nearby residents, but subjectively it is their garden-like place. In the early morning mostly elderly people get together to stroll but in the evening, all folks of all ages arrive, some walking with their pets and a number of
them sitting on benches chatting with each other or listening to MP3s.

Pets are quite common to spot these days ― they are a new custom to raise and nurse at home. I can notice a number of pet clinics around here, new businesses in Korea. It is a long tradition to have pets in Western societies and they are often left a legacy by their owners as if they were family members.

FOOD

With alternately tearful goodbyes and barely contained impatience, more than 100 South Floridians surrendered their exotic animals Saturday at a zoo event designed to give owners an alternative to simply turning them loose.

The canopied plastic tables at the Miami Metro Zoo became exhibits of their own as passers-by hoisted children and snapped pictures of the snakes, scorpions and turtles being handed over in laundry baskets, food storage containers and pillow cases.

Of the more than 150 pets handed over on "Exotic Pet Amnesty Day" by people who could no longer care for the beasts, all but six found new homes.

Among the more bizarre submissions were a rhino iguana, a spotted African servile cat and a Dortmund — a raccoon-looking mammal found in South America.

"This is garden-variety stuff," said exotic pet veterinarian Thomas Goldsmith, who examined the submissions. "This is Miami. People have sloths and leopards and God knows what else."

Miami resident Ray Padilla, 17, came with seven snakes — Burmese pythons and Colombian boas — each in a pillow case knotted at the opening. He started collecting them as pets when he was 5 and said, simply, "No more room," and, later, "Eh, new hobby."

Regulations on owning exotic pets have tightened in the past year and will continue to get stricter, said Scott Hardin, who works in the nonnative species division of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Tighter restrictions usually mean more animals are released into the wild, which can be difficult for domesticated exotic animals and harm others, too. Burmese pythons eat the already rare Key Largo wood rat; parakeets cause power failures because they nest in transformers; and iguanas consume landscape vegetation.

A U.S. federal grand jury indicted two Chinese businesses, a U.S. company and their top executives in connection with tainted pet food, which killed and sickened up to thousands of pets last year, prosecutors said.

The businesses and executives are accused of playing a role in manufacturing and importing a tainted ingredient used to make the pet food.

A 26-felony count indictment on Wednesday named Xuzhou Annoying Biologic Technology Development Co., LTD (XAC), a Chinese processor of plant proteins, and its owner and manager, Mao Lanzhou, who is believed to reside in China.

Also named were Suzhou Textiles, Silk, Light Industrial Products, Arts and Crafts I/E Co. LTD (SSC), a Chinese export broker used by XAC to export products to the United States, and 58-year-old Chen Zen Hoe.

The businesses and their officials were charged with 13 felony counts of distributing adulterated food and 13 felony counts of distribution of misprinted food.

A separate but related 27-count indictment named Chemistry Inc., a La's Vegas, Nevada-based company, and its owners -- Sally Wing Miller, 41, a Chinese national, and her husband Stephen S. Miller.

A U.S. food importing company, its owners and two Chinese businesses were indicted today by a federal grand jury in Kansas for their roles in allegedly manufacturing and importing a tainted pet food ingredient that may have killed thousands of cats and dogs.

The U.S. company, called ChemNutra and run by husband and wife Stephen and Sally Miller, imported and distributed wheat gluten, a protein-rich ingredient commonly used in pet food. The gluten contained melamine, a poisonous chemical that is used to create plastics, cleaning products, countertops, glues, inks and fertilizers, the indictment states.

PETS BEHAVIOUR

A new study should have cat owners purring with delight. It suggests they are somehow partly protected from the ravages of heart disease.

"Over a 20-year period, people who never owned a cat faced a 40-per-cent greater risk of death due to heart attack than previous or current cat owners," said the lead researcher, Adnan Qureshi, a professor at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Qureshi, who presented the findings at a medical conference in New Orleans yesterday, is at a loss to explain his study, which involved 4,435 volunteers.

"The best theory we can come up with is that ... cat ownership leads to reduced stress levels which, in turn, lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease" he suggested. On the other hand, it is possible that cats don't directly shield people from heart attacks. Instead, cat owners as a group may share specific personality traits that reduce their chances of suffering from heart disease at an early age.

The study also produced another surprising and perplexing result: Dog owners did not have the same level of protection against heart disease as their cat-owning counterparts.

"When we started the study, we thought we would find it [a lower heart-attack risk] in both groups," Dr. Qureshi confided. After all, taking a dog for a walk should be good for your heart.

He speculated that personality differences between the two types of pet owners might account for the unexpected conclusions.

Or, the results may be related to how long people own their pets. Cats tend to live twice as long as dogs. That could mean cat owners have longer exposure to the potentially positive influences of their feline companions.

She was trembling with fear, shivering with cold, and all of four months old when I found her last week, wandering around the streets by herself in the middle of the night.

Now, with eight pets already -- the majority of whom came from bad situations -- I needed another dog like I needed a sharp pencil jabbed in my eye, but there was no way my conscience would allow me to leave her to fend for herself on a freezing February night.

Poppy, as I've named her, wasn't wearing a collar, and I don't hold out much hope of finding her owner, because at this time of year abandoned Christmas pets turn up in the rescue shelters in their droves.

In the first month of 2008, 67 young dogs were handed in to the Ashtown Pound in Dublin, while a further 148 were picked up from the streets. And according to Orla Aungier of the DSPCA, the situation really comes to a head around Easter every year, when the post-Christmas novelty of owning a dog has well and truly worn off.

I don't cry easily, but I was moved to tears by the recent article by Niamh Horan about how we euthanised 14,000 unwanted dogs last year, which was accompanied by the pitiful sight of a group of beautiful animals lying dead in a twisted heap on a bloody concrete floor, an image that is now seared on my brain for life.

I knew from the moment I found her that Poppy would end up becoming a permanent addition, because I couldn't bear the possibility of her ending up like that. And the ones arriving at the shelters are the lucky ones, relatively speaking, because being euthanised is at least a humane ending for these dogs. The rest are dumped somewhere and abandoned to their fate -- possibly to freeze or starve to death, while others will be killed or injured by cars.

Pets make great companions for all people, young and old, as well as families. They key is to find the types of pets that are right for you, whether you like cats, dogs, birds, rodents, or any other type of domesticated animal. You should choose a pet based on what sort of animal suits your personality and works with your lifestyle. Some types of pets are better suited to people living in small apartments while other types of pets do best on very large properties where they have lots of room to exercise. It’s important to realize that not all animals make good pets.

Pet Names

Different pet names suit different kinds of pets, so you should give your pet’s name some thought. You can find lists of pet names if you need ideas. You can search specifically for cat names, bird names, dog names, and fish names. You can calla fish pretty much any pet name you want and it won’t make a difference, but if you’ve got a pet like a dog, you’ll want to put some thought into naming them. Dogs are one of the few types of pets that actually come to you when you call them, so you’ll want to choose an appropriate name.

Virtual Pets

For those who can’t handle the responsibility of owning a real pet or don’t have the means to support another life, you can get a virtual pet. The only real downside of virtual pets is that they’re not real, you can’t play with them, and they don’t make exciting companions. However, virtual pets don’t have exorbitant vet bills and you can have any sort of virtual pet you want, whether it’s a bunny rabbit or a tiger. Unfortunately, some people think it’s ok to have tigers and other wild animals as pets. They keep wild animals in captivity as pets and the animals suffer greatly as a result. Lions and tigers are not made to live in cages in your back yard. Another stupid thing that people do is make themselves believe that the animals are happy and that they’re their friends so they try to play with their pets and get mauled or killed. Of course baby lions are cute and harmless but anyone with any sense knows they’re not going to stay that way and playing with a full grown tiger who hates you for locking him in a cage is not going to end well. Generally, when people get eaten or mutilated by wild animals they’ve captured to keep in captivity as pets, they had it coming to them.
